The Japanese Maple is a slow-growing shrub or small tree with soft green palmate leaves that color to a rich crimson in autumn. The long stalked clusters of purplish-red flowers are followed by "key" like fruits with two wings. The helicopters or whirly birds that filled the sky of our childhood.
